Murphy cheered by union members at rally before first debate

Posted OnSeptember 29, 2021 byadmin
Hundreds of union brothers and sisters were absolutely electric in their enthusiasm as they rallied in support of pro-worker Gov. Phil Murphy ahead of his gubernatorial debate on Tuesday, September 28. Their cheers hailed him as the right choice in this year’s election.

“No governor in recent history has done more for New Jersey’s working families than Phil Murphy,” New Jersey State AFL-CIO President Charles Wowkanech said. “And he and Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver led quickly, decisively and compassionately when New Jersey became a COVID hot spot.”

Throngs of union members from every sector of labor and every part of New Jersey flocked to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. They chartered buses, car-pooled and rode public transportation to show their enthusiasm for the governor’s re-election. Sisters and brothers proudly wore their union colors and waved signs with pro-Murphy slogans. They rallied in vast numbers that far exceeded the anemic turnout of supporters for Governor Murphy’s opponent.

The pre-debate rally was sponsored by the New Jersey State AFL-CIO and the Bergen County, Essex-West Hudson, Hudson County and Passaic County Labor Councils. All of New Jersey’s Central Labor Councils are actively supporting the Murphy-Oliver ticket and the full slate of labor-endorsed candidates through weekly labor walks, virtual phone banks, mailings and text campaigns.

Union members are committed to making sure everyone who can vote does vote. Balloting in New Jersey is already underway through Vote-by-Mail, with in-person Early Voting from October 23 through October 31 and in-person voting on Election Day, November 2.

New Jersey needs pro-worker leaders. That’s why union members rallied for Gov. Phil Murphy on Tuesday and that’s why union members volunteer every Saturday for labor walks.
