Journeyperson Training Course Descriptions
Important Information
SMART Local Union No. 25 night classes are open to all Journeypersons on a first come basis. Class sizes are limited. Anyone interested in a particular class should immediately click the link and sign up for classes and you will pay for all classes online.
All night courses/seminars are 4 hour classes, with a 15-minute break from 6:45 to 7:00 PM.
The tuition for all night seminars/courses $10.00/$25.00/$50.00. All tuitions must be paid by online through Union Fusion.
Please use the calendars to determine your first day of class and class nights. There will be no other notifications of classes.
BASIC WELDING
80 hour course, 2 nights per week held on Mondays and Wednesdays. Our welding school is an AWS certified testing facility. We cover STICK, MIG & TIG welding, Oxy/Acetylene & Plasma Cutting. This course will prepare you for Welding Certification at the end of the course.
ADVANCED WELDING
40-hour course held on Tuesdays. Our welding school is an AWS-certified testing facility. We cover STICK, MIG & TIG welding, Oxy/Acetylene & Plasma Cutting. This course will prepare you for Welding Certification at the end of the course. Please bring your own Welding Helmet, Gloves, and Jacket with you to class. If you need any items, we will have some available for purchase at the Training Facility.
CONFINED SPACE COURSE
8 hour course held online. This course will teach you about the hazard of confined spaces on construction sites, controlling confined space hazards, rescue procedures and safe work practices.
FIRE SMOKE DAMPER TECHNICIAN
20 hour course held online. This course will cover correct procedures of installation, maintenance, terminology and symbols. This class prepares you for the certification exam.
OSHA-30 - Government Standards Construction Safety
30 hour course held online. This seminar will teach you about the Occupational Safety Health Act, the standards for general industry construction and employee and employer responsibilities as they relate to job site safety. OSHA-30 Certification Card included with completion of this class.
FA/CPR/AED
8 hr. Course – Members will know how to care for Illness and injuries by learning, Basic Life Support CPR. Basic First Aid & AED.
SERVICE 1 – Level 1 HVAC Service
60 hour course. This course will cover areas of work performed, working conditions, technician’s responsibilities, hand tools, instrumentation, and data collecting and will prepare you for the Service 2 class. Also, theories and concepts of HVAC & Refrigeration will be covered.
SERVICE 2 – Level 2 HVAC Service
70 hour course. This course will cover areas of work performed, working conditions, technician’s responsibilities, hand tools, instrumentation, and data collecting. Also theories and concepts of HVAC & Refrigeration. Also will help prepare you for the EPA Certification at the end of the class.
FOREPERSON/PROJECT MANAGEMENT
20-hour course held on Tuesday & Thursdays. This course will train you to understand the major goals of a Sheet Metal Foreperson/ Project Manager, identify the broad functional areas, and the skills necessary to be successful.
FOREPERSON ONLINE
8 hour course held online. This course will cover the responsibilities of being a Foreperson in addition to planning, contract drawings, specs, manufacturer’s submittal data, project schedules, meetings, change orders, dealing w/ customers/ owners/ engineers, management of manpower, & cost control.
RIGGING/ SIGNALING
8 hour course held on 1 Saturday or 2 nights. This course will cover the safety issues in the operation of all types of cranes, equipment inspections, basic operator and rigger skills. Also includes concepts and techniques for handling, attaching, and moving loads. This course will go over the use and understanding of all standard hand signals, the importance of the safety aspect of the hand signals as well as the voice communications that are required. Separate exams for Signaling and Rigging will take place during the course. Once you pass the Exams you will receive the Certification.
TAB – Testing, Adjusting & Balancing
40 hour course, usually 1 night per week held on Thursdays. This class covers the basics of Testing, Adjusting and Balancing of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems for air. Also covers, hand tools, instrumentation, data collecting and theories/concepts of air movement.
A-CAD - Basic AutoCAD Drafting
40-hour course held on Wednesdays. This course will be a basic introductory class into the AutoCAD Program including navigating through existing drawing files. Once you have a basic understanding of ACAD drawing of lines and text you will be given specific drawing tasks and a graded project.
A-CAD - ADVANCED AUTOCAD DRAFTING
40-hour course held on Thursdays. This course will be a advanced class continuing from Basic AutoCAD Program including navigating through existing drawing files. Students will create duct drawings from start to finish and explore how 3D BIM modeling is used in our trade.
AERIAL LIFT TRAINING - MEWP, ROUGH TERRAIN FORKLIFT, INDUSTRIAL FORKLIFT - HYBRID
8 hour daytime course or hybrid online classroom with in person hands on. This course will train you using hands on experience for the Single Person Lift, the Scissor Lift, and the Boom Lift. At the completion of the course you will receive a Certificate of Completion Wallet Card.
8 hour daytime course or hybrid online classroom with in person hands on. This course will train you using hands on experience for the Rough Terrain Forklift (LULL). At the completion of the course you will receive a Certificate of Completion Wallet Card.
8 hour daytime course or hybrid online classroom with in person hands on. This course will train you using hands on experience for the Industrial Forklift. At the completion of the course you will receive a Certificate of Completion Wallet Card.
