Night School Calendars Spring 2024

OSHA 10 / OSHA 30

You can opt to take OSHA 10 or OSHA 30. The cost for the OSHA 10-hour is $59 and OSHA 30-hour is $135.20. This seminar will teach you about the Occupational Safety Health Act, the standards for general industry construction and employee and employer responsibilities as they relate to job site safety. OSHA Certification Card included with completion of this class.

Journeyperson Training Course Descriptions

Important Information

SMWIA Local Union No. 25 night classes are open to all Journeypersons on a first come basis. Class sizes are limited. Anyone interested in a particular class should immediately mail in their check/money order along with the course selection sheet.
All night courses/seminars are 4 hour classes, with a 15-minute break from 6:45 to 7:00 PM.
The tuition for all night seminars/courses $10.00/$25.00/$50.00. All tuitions must be paid by check/money order made payable to the SMWIA Local Union No. 25 Ed Fund and mailed or hand delivered to the JATC.
Please use the calendars to determine your first day of class and class nights. There will be no other notifications of classes.

ADVANCED WELDING

100 hour course, 2 nights per week held on Mondays and Wednesdays. Our welding school is an AWS certified testing facility. We cover STICK, MIG & TIG welding, Oxy/Acetylene & Plasma Cutting. This course will prepare you for Welding Certification at the end of the course.

CONFINED SPACE COURSE

4 hour course held on one night. This course will teach you about the hazard of confined spaces on construction sites, controlling confined space hazards, rescue procedures and safe work practices.

FIRE LIFE SAFETY – Level 1 Technician

16 hour course for a total of 4 nights. This course will cover correct procedures of installation, maintenance, terminology and symbols. Successful completion of this class comes with a certification as a Fire Life Safety Technician Level 1.

FIRE LIFE SAFETY – Level 2 Technician

20 hour course held on 5 nights. This course will provide considerations for the inspection, service, follow-up inspection/testing program of mechanical smoke control and smoke management systems. You must have already passed Fire Life Safety Level 1 Technician in order to enroll in this class. Successful completions of this class comes with a certification as a Fire Life Safety Level 2 Technician.

FOREPERSON/PROJECT MANAGEMENT

32 hour course, 1 night per week on Wednesdays. This course will cover the responsibilities of being a Foreperson & Project Mngr. in addition to planning, contract drawings, specs, manufacturer’s submittal data, project schedules, meetings, change orders, dealing w/ customers/ owners/ engineers, management of manpower, & cost control.

GREEN AWARENESS

16 Hour course. This course is to introduce students to be more aware of energy costs through fuel and energy efficiency, renewable and sustainable fuel and water conservation. Also, will provide students with a basic understanding of Green concepts, terminology and the latest technology. Students will receive a Certification Card after passing the Exam at the end of the course.

GREEN ADVANTAGE

24 hour course. This course focuses on basic construction field principles, means and methods that help ensure successful green building projects. You will receive a Certification after passing the Exam at the end of the class.

OSHA-30 - Government Standards Construction Safety

30 hour seminar covered over 8 nights, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This seminar will teach you about the Occupational Safety Health Act, the standards for general industry construction and employee and employer responsibilities as they relate to job site safety. OSHA-30 Certification Card included with completion of this class.

RIGGING – HOISTING & RIGGING

8 hour course, held on two nights. This course will cover the safety issues in the operation of all types of cranes, equipment inspections, basic operator and rigger skills. Also includes concepts and techniques for handling, attaching, and moving loads. Will include a Hoisting & Rigging Certification at the end.

SERVICE 1 – Level 1 HVAC Service

60 hour course. This course will cover areas of work performed, working conditions, technician’s responsibilities, hand tools, instrumentation, and data collecting and will prepare you for the Service 2 class. Also, theories and concepts of HVAC & Refrigeration will be covered.

SERVICE 2 – Level 2 HVAC Service

70 hour course. This course will cover areas of work performed, working conditions, technician’s responsibilities, hand tools, instrumentation, and data collecting. Also theories and concepts of HVAC & Refrigeration. Also will help prepare you for the EPA Certification at the end of the class.

S & D – Siding and Decking

20 hour course, held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This course covers the blueprint reading, installation, erection, maintenance and fabrication of Sheet Metal Siding and Decking. The course is taught using a full size mock-up that is built in the parking lot.

SIGNALPERSON

3 hour course. This course covers the use and understanding of all standard hand signals, the importance of the safety aspect of the hand signals as well as the voice communications that are required. Will include a Signalperson Certification Card at the end of the class.

TAB – Testing, Adjusting & Balancing

60 hour course, usually 1 night per week held on Wednesdays with a couple Mondays thrown in as well. This class covers the basics of Testing, Adjusting and Balancing of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems for air. Also covers, hand tools, instrumentation, data collecting and theories/concepts of air movement.

A-CAD 1 - Basic AutoCAD Drafting

40 hour course, 2 nights per week held on Mondays and Wednesdays. This course is a beginner basic Computer Drafting Course.

PCRA (Construction) - Pre-Construction Risk Assessment (ANSI Certification)

16 hour course held on 4 nights. This course will teach awareness of hazards, such as asbestos, lead, mild, silica, blood borne pathogens, other hospital-specific concerns, and identify and classify work areas to best minimize risks, illness and injury. You will receive a Certification Card at the conclusion of the class upon passing the Exam.

LEED CORE CONCEPTS & GREEN BUILDING PRINCIPLES

24 course. This course is the pre-requisite for taking the LEED Associate Exam.

LEED for New Construction/Sheet Metal Edition

This 12 hour course would not only provide a basic knowledge of Green Building, but also specifically include the impact sheet metal, IAQ & HVAC can have on a LEED/Green Building Project. Ventilation & IAQ are critical parts of green building certification. Sheet Metal contractors can use green systems, methods & materials in their work with new and existing buildings and have a huge impact on LEED categories such as Energy & Atmosphere, Materials and Indoor Environmental Quality, all critical factors of LEED & Green Building. The course will also cover the LEED endorsed SMACNA guidelines for IAQ during construction and flush out procedures prior to occupancy. Upon completion of this course, each participant receives a USGBC Certificate in LEED for New Construction/Sheet Metal.

GAR HALL AERIAL LIFT TRAINING (H.A.L.T.)

8 hour daytime course. This course will train you using hands on experience for the Single Person Lift, the Scissor Lift, and the Boom Lift. At the completion of the course you will receive a Certificate of Completion Wallet Card.

CLEAN ROOM

16 hour course held on 4 night. This course will introduce you to clean room drawings, classifications, components, and why they are important to Sheet Metal Workers now more than ever before.
