Obituary – George N. Snell, Jr.

George N. Snell, Jr., 60, of Scotch Plains, formerly of Linden and Clark, passed away surrounded by his family and loved ones on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at Overlook Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Born in Elizabeth, George grew up in Linden and graduated from Linden High School in 1980.

George was an overall athlete and outstanding baseball player in high school and was recognized as a top pitcher in New Jersey in 1980 and was awarded the first State Championship for Linden in baseball history. He was recruited to pitch for University of Alabama.

George was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 25 in Lyndhurst and worked for Bonland before retiring in 2020. He was also the former owner of Dukes Deli in Westfield.

He will be remembered as a beloved and dedicated father and for his humor and immense strength. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Surviving are his daughter, Georgianna Snell; and three sons, George N. Snell, III, Nolan Cerchio-Snell and Myles Cerchio-Snell, with whom he loved to play golf with every day. He is also survived by his father, George C. Snell, Sr.; his sister, Diane K. O’Neill and her husband, Rob O’Neill; and his loving girlfriend of six years, Kelly Panno. He was a beloved uncle to Tara, Taylor, Anthony, Alessia and Owen. He was predeceased by his mother, Mary Ann Snell and grandmother, Julia (Bubbba) Tirch.

Visitation will be at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave., Fanwood on Thursday, October 20th from 4 PM to 8 PM. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Helen’s RC Church in Westfield on Friday at 10 AM. Interment will follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.
